1、 Basic performance
Diatomite is water containing silicon dioxide, the amount of water is variable, the chemical molecular formula is SiO2 · nH2O, the appearance is gray powder to white powder, the bulk density is very small, the body is light, the particles are fluffy, the refractive index is low, the particles are coarse, the particle surface is porous, the adsorption is strong, and the oil absorption is high.
2、 Performance as filler
1. Porosity
There are more than 85% interconnected micropores or voids in the volume of diatomite, that is, diatomite is dominated by pores rather than diatoms.
2. High absorption capacity
Diatomite can generally absorb 1.5 times its own mass of liquid and still show the characteristics of dry powder. It absorbs liquid twice its mass before it becomes a flowing paste.
3. Unique particle structure
The granular structure of diatomite is characterized by its irregular shape, generally prickly structure and concave surface. The average diameter of diatomite is only 2-5 μ m. Its surface area is much larger than that of other minerals with the same size particles.
4. Very low bulk density
Due to the unique structure of diatomite, its particles are easy to accumulate together. These particles can withstand compression because the contact between particles is limited to the points on the surface of each particle, and its loose bulk density is 0.2kg/m3.
